Thunderbird Artists is excited to conclude our 2018/2019 season of fine art and wine events in our home town of Fountain Hills for the 15th Annual Fountain Hills Fine Art & Wine Affaire, March 8th, 9th & 10th. The event lines the Avenue of the Fountains and integrates superior fine art and fine crafts with a vast selection of imported and domestic wines, local micro-brews, flavored spirits, tasty food, delectable sweets and live musical entertainment! The featured artist is Fountain Hills resident, scratchboard artist, Deborah Liszt.
Deborah Liszt, wildlife artist, began her professional art career in 1977. She is self taught in a very unique and challenging art medium called scratchboard. Scratchboard is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. Scratchboard refers to both a fine-art medium and an illustrative technique using sharp knives and tools for engraving into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with dark, often black India ink. There is also foil paper covered with black ink that, when scratched, exposes the shiny surface beneath. Scratchboard originated in the 19th century, but is still fairly rare, due to the complexity of the process. "At the time that I discovered scratchboard art, I was working with pen and ink and pencil. Because of the dimensional and textural effects achieved with this medium, I felt that it would be a much more realistic approach with the subject of animals." Deborah works with many local animal rescues and charities to honor her art subjects.
In addition to Deborah Liszt, this juried festival hosts 125 nationally acclaimed, award-winning artists from throughout the country and abroad; in addition to unparalleled wine and micro-brew tasting, as well as rum sampling. For $10, patrons receive an engraved souvenir wine or beer glass with six tasting tickets, allowing them to sample wines from throughout world, as well as rum, or indulge in an ice cold beer. This unique event brings together fine art, wine tasting, delectable food, mouthwatering confections and live musical entertainment - featuring Bob Culbertson on the Chapman Stick and Chuck Hall. Bob Culbertson is an influential Chapman Stick player, as an early adopter of the instrument, he is notable for his many recorded albums and extensive touring. Chuck Hall is a guitarist and vocalist. Chuck’s unique talent and uncompromising dedication to his craft have earned him accolades among fans and critics. He won “Best Blues Guitarist” in Arizona two years in a row, and his song “Young Boy” was selected Best Song by Soundboard magazine. He also was inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 2000. His most recent offerings include a two-disc compilation CD and the ‘Live in Sweden’ disc.
